This weekend feels different. There are simply too many exciting releases to talk about, and honestly, it was hard to leave out the bonus picks. These are my five strongest recommendations for the weekend, but I would not stop there—whatever genre you’re into, there is probably something on this list that will catch your attention.

Disclosure Day

Steven Spielberg returns to UFO territory with what many critics are calling one of his most ambitious films in years. Starring Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Eve Hewson, and Colman Domingo, Disclosure Day follows a whistleblower fleeing a rogue agency with footage that could change humanity forever. At the same time, a television meteorologist finds herself mysteriously connected to an alien language and begins experiencing extraordinary abilities.

Blending suspense, mystery, and Spielberg’s signature sense of wonder, the film unfolds as a thrilling chase rather than a traditional alien invasion story. If you’re only seeing one film this weekend, this is probably the one to prioritize.

Where to Watch: In theaters

The Local Pick: Backstage

Representing Rwanda on this week’s watchlist is Backstage, a musical drama centered on Gina, a young woman determined to pursue a career in music despite her father’s belief that it cannot secure her future. At the heart of the story is a question many young people can relate to: do you follow your passion or meet the expectations others have for you?

Having watched the first three episodes, I found the series engaging despite its familiar premise. While the central storyline may feel cliché at times, Backstage offers much more than Gina’s musical journey. The series explores family expectations, friendship, ambition, young adulthood, and complicated relationships, creating multiple storylines that keep viewers invested.

The pacing can be slow and some scenes feel repetitive, but several cast members deliver strong performances that make the story easy to follow and enjoy. If you enjoy dramas that reflect everyday life and feature familiar faces from the local entertainment scene, Backstage is definitely worth checking out.

Every Year After

Adapted from Carley Fortune’s bestselling novel Every Summer After, Every Year After follows two childhood sweethearts whose past and present collide in a picturesque lakeside town. Moving between a golden teenage summer and a complicated reunion years later, the series delivers romance, heartbreak, and plenty of nostalgia.

Led by Sadie Soverall (Saltburn) and Matt Cornett (High School Musical: The Musical: The Series), the show feels poised to become one of the season’s biggest romance binges.

Where to Watch: Prime Video

Alice and Steve

Fresh off a triumphant run at CANNESERIES, where it won Best Series along with multiple other awards, Alice and Steve follows two lifelong friends whose relationship is thrown into chaos when Steve begins dating Alice’s much younger daughter.

Written by Sex Education writer Sophie Goodhart and starring Nicola Walker alongside What We Do in the Shadows star Jemaine Clement, the series is sharp, awkward, and surprisingly heartfelt. It has quickly become one of the year’s most acclaimed comedies.

Where to Watch: Hulu (US) / Disney+ (International)

Passenger

For horror fans, Passenger offers a tense and unsettling ride. After stopping to help at the scene of a gruesome highway accident, a young couple discovers that something sinister has attached itself to their vehicle. The result is a slow-burning psychological horror that relies on atmosphere and dread rather than cheap scares.
