Nick Reiner, son of acclaimed American filmmaker Rob Reiner, has pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder following the deaths of his parents in Los Angeles.

During an arraignment held on Monday, February 23, at the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Reiner formally entered his plea. Prosecutors allege that the 32-year-old is responsible for the deaths of Rob Reiner — the celebrated director behind films including Stand by Me, The Princess Bride, and When Harry Met Sally — and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner.

The couple were found deceased in their Brentwood home on December 14, 2025.

Court appearance and delayed arraignment

Appearing behind protective glass, Reiner briefly addressed the court, focusing primarily on procedural matters, including waiving his right to a speedy trial.

The arraignment had originally been scheduled for January 7 but was postponed after prominent defense attorney Alan Jackson requested to withdraw from the case. Los Angeles County public defender Kimberly Greene subsequently sought a continuance, moving the hearing to February 23.

A preliminary hearing has now been scheduled for April 29. At that stage, the court will determine whether prosecutors have presented sufficient evidence for the case to proceed to trial.

Charges and legal strategy

Authorities have charged Reiner with two counts of murder, including special-circumstance allegations typically associated with multiple homicides. While prosecutors have not yet fully outlined their case, attention has begun to shift toward the defense’s potential strategy.

Beyond the charges, court filings have also drawn attention to Reiner’s mental health history.
According to documents referenced during proceedings, he has faced longstanding struggles related to mental health and substance abuse, and had previously spent time in rehabilitation facilities.

Reports presented in court further indicated that Reiner had allegedly been diagnosed with schizophrenia in the weeks leading up to his parents’ deaths.

Legal experts note that Reiner’s mental state at the time of the incident could become a central issue, particularly if his defense team pursues an insanity plea. Investigators are also expected to examine whether the alleged killings were premeditated — a key factor that may significantly influence both verdict and sentencing.

Potential outcomes

If the case advances and Reiner is convicted without a successful insanity defense, he could face life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, or potentially the death penalty under California law.

Despite stepping away from the case, former defense attorney Alan Jackson publicly expressed confidence in Reiner’s innocence during a podcast interview, stating that he believes his former client is not guilty.

Understanding schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is a complex psychiatric disorder that can affect perception, thinking, and behavior. Symptoms may include hallucinations, delusions, and disorganized speech. With appropriate treatment, many individuals are able to manage their condition and maintain stable daily lives.

Looking ahead

The case continues to attract significant public attention, not only due to the severity of the charges but also because of Rob Reiner’s lasting influence on American cinema. Further developments are expected at the preliminary hearing in April.
