Funke Akindele: Three consecutive years at the top of Nollywood’s box office
Year after year, Funke Akindele doesn’t just top the box office — she defines it. With each release, she reshapes what it means to win in Nollywood, turning audiences into believers and filmmakers into students of her craft. From A tribe called Judah to Behind The Scenes (2025/2026), her consecutive record-breaking films have earned her the distinction of West Africa’s highest-grossing filmmaker, producer, and director of all time, generating over ₦5.3 billion in revenue over the last three years.
Her latest project, Behind The Scenes, released on December 12, 2025, tells the story of Aderonke Faniran, a mother of two and successful real estate mogul whose generosity begins to strain her personal life. Audiences connect deeply with Aderonke’s struggle to balance personal boundaries with the expectations of others, making the story relatable and emotionally resonant.
“I originally planned to shoot A Tribe Called Judah 2, but I felt divinely instructed to pivot to this story about family, boundaries, and the pressures we place on ourselves,” Akindele revealed.
The ensemble cast — including Tobi Bakre, Uzor Arukwe, Iyabo Ojo, Destiny Etiko, and Uche Montana — brings depth and humor, creating characters audiences talk about long after the credits roll. The film has also performed strongly internationally, with audiences in the UK, Ireland, USA, and Canada, particularly at Odeon Cinemas in the UK.
From its opening week, the film made waves: it earned ₦129.5 million on Boxing Day 2025, setting a new single-day record for Nollywood. By January 12, 2026, it became the first Nollywood film to cross the ₦2 billion mark, and as of February 2026, Behind The Scenes has reached a total of ₦2.5 billion, making it the highest-grossing Nollywood film of all time.
Yet Akindele emphasizes that success is about more than numbers.
“Hard work, perseverance, and telling stories that resonate with our people have always been key to my success,” she shared on Instagram.
Her career demonstrates that these principles are not abstract ideals. Akindele has built a repeatable, sustainable model of success, balancing commercial appeal with creative authority. From her breakout role in Jenifa to her string of Christmas releases, she consistently creates stories that are deeply Nigerian yet universally accessible.
Beyond filmmaking, Akindele actively empowers the next generation. Through The Creative Blueprint masterclass, she shares practical lessons on storytelling, audience engagement, and building a career that lasts. She is shaping a new generation not only as a role model but as a mentor who provides the tools, frameworks, and strategies for success.
Her influence is structural. She has normalized longevity, discipline, and authenticity in an industry often defined by fleeting trends. Behind The Scenes is more than a record-breaking film; it is a reflection of a career built with intention, foresight, and care.
Funke Akindele isn’t just breaking records — she is building paths for others to follow, proving that in Nollywood, true influence is measured by the leaders you leave behind.
